Starting Solids and Introducing Allergens: What the Evidence Actually Shows
The old advice was to delay peanuts and eggs as long as possible — two landmark trials flipped that guidance. Here's what starting solids and introducing allergens actually looks like, backed by the research.

Somewhere around 6 months, spoons and purees enter the picture — and so does one of the biggest reversals in pediatric feeding guidance in a generation. For years, parents were told to delay peanuts, eggs, and other common allergens for as long as possible. The research now points the other way: introducing them early, and keeping them in the rotation, appears to lower a baby's risk of developing a food allergy in the first place. Here's what the trials actually found, how to tell your baby is ready for solids, and how to bring allergens into the mix without dread.
How to know your baby is ready
Age is a rough guide, but readiness is really about what your baby's body can do. NHS guidance points to three signs that tend to show up together around 6 months: your baby can sit up with minimal support, can coordinate looking at food, grabbing it, and getting it to their mouth, and has lost the tongue-thrust reflex that instinctively pushes anything solid back out. The CDC and AAP both frame 6 months as the general starting point, with some flexibility either direction depending on development rather than the calendar. What doesn't belong on the readiness list: sleeping through the night, or a caregiver's hope for a break from bottles — sleep and solids aren't linked the way some family lore suggests.
What the research says
The clearest evidence in this space comes from two large randomized trials that changed allergy-prevention guidance worldwide.
The LEAP (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) trial, published in 2015, enrolled infants aged 4 to 10 months who were already at higher risk of food allergy because of severe eczema or an egg allergy. Half were assigned to eat peanut-containing foods three times a week; half were told to avoid peanut entirely, both groups followed until age 5. The result was striking: about 3% of the early-introduction group had developed a peanut allergy by age 5, compared with roughly 17% of the avoidance group — a reduction of around 80%. A follow-up study, LEAP-On, found the protection held even after children stopped eating peanut daily, suggesting the early exposure had built lasting tolerance rather than a temporary effect.
The EAT (Enquiring About Tolerance) study, running from 2016 to 2019, tested a broader version of the same idea in over 1,300 infants from the general population, introducing six common allergens (including egg, milk, and peanut) starting at 3 months alongside continued breastfeeding, versus the standard approach of waiting until 6 months or later. That 3-month start was the trial's protocol, designed to test the earliest plausible window — it isn't the recommendation; guidance still points to starting around 6 months, and not before 4 in any case. Among families who actually followed the early-introduction plan closely, allergy rates by 12 months were 2.4% versus 7.3% in the standard-introduction group — with the clearest benefit in babies who already had eczema or signs of sensitization. The catch was adherence: the intent-to-treat analysis, which counted everyone regardless of how well they stuck to the schedule, showed a smaller effect — a reminder that consistency seems to matter almost as much as timing.
One worry that used to hold parents back — that early solids would crowd out breastfeeding — hasn't held up either. A randomized-trial analysis published in 2020 found that introducing solids before 6 months didn't shorten breastfeeding duration; the two can coexist without one undercutting the other.
There's also a plausible biological story behind why timing matters. A 2023 review of the immunology involved suggests early allergen exposure, especially through the gut, may help the immune system build regulatory tolerance — essentially teaching it that peanut protein is food, not a threat — through mechanisms that seem to work differently once the introduction window has passed. It's a partial explanation, not a settled one, but it fits the pattern seen in LEAP and EAT.
Separately, a 2022 randomized trial looking at fish as an early complementary food, introduced around 6 to 7 months, found it supported better linear growth than a control diet — one more data point suggesting that which foods you introduce, not just when, carries nutritional weight of its own.
What comes after the first tastes
Introducing allergens is really just the opening chapter of a longer texture and variety story. Around 7 to 9 months, most babies move from single-ingredient purees toward mashed and minced textures, with 2 to 3 solid meals a day layered on top of continued breast milk or formula, which stays the primary source of nutrition through this stretch. Finger foods — soft cooked vegetables, ripe soft fruit, small pieces of cooked meat — are worth encouraging here too, since self-feeding is its own developmental skill and not just a feeding shortcut. Iron-fortified foods matter in particular for breastfed babies, since a full-term baby's iron stores from birth start running low around this age.
By 10 to 12 months, texture keeps progressing toward chopped and soft family foods, meals expand to 3 a day plus 1 to 2 snacks, and more infants are managing some combination of fingers and a spoon on their own. Breast milk or formula continues; whole cow's milk isn't recommended as the primary drink until after 12 months. None of this needs to happen on a strict timeline — it's a gradual widening of what's on the plate, not a checklist to race through.
Two drink-related rules sit alongside all of this regardless of what's on the plate. First, no honey before 12 months, in any form — not stirred into food, not baked into a snack, not on a pacifier — because of the risk of infant botulism; a baby's gut can't yet handle the bacterial spores that honey can carry. Second, plain water in small amounts alongside meals is fine once solids start, but isn't needed before 6 months, and fruit juice isn't recommended at all in the first year — breast milk or formula stays the primary drink throughout.
A practical way to introduce allergens
Based on updated guidance from the Canadian Paediatric Society and the broader shift in AAP and NHS advice, the practical version looks like this:
- Start around 6 months, once your baby shows the readiness signs above — not before 4 months in any case.
- Offer common allergens (peanut, egg, dairy, tree nuts, fish, sesame, wheat, soy) in age-appropriate forms — smooth peanut butter thinned with water, breast milk, or fruit puree, never whole nuts or thick peanut butter on its own, both choking hazards.
- Give a new allergen a few times in the first couple of weeks, then keep offering it regularly — the protective effect in the studies came from continued exposure, not a single taste-test.
- Keep breastfeeding or formula going alongside solids; neither trial found early introduction shortened breastfeeding.
- If your baby already has significant eczema or a known food allergy, it's worth talking to your pediatrician before starting, since that's the higher-risk group the LEAP trial focused on specifically.
There's no strong evidence that a rigid one-food-per-three-days rule is necessary for typically developing infants without risk factors — it's a reasonable way to watch for reactions, but the research doesn't require it.
When to call your pediatrician: Reach out the same day for hives, lip or facial swelling, repeated vomiting, or any breathing difficulty within two hours of a new food — and true trouble breathing or throat swelling means emergency care, not a wait-and-see. For milder things, like a small rash, one-off spit-up, or a few days of looser or firmer stools after a new food, a routine call to your pediatrician is enough to talk it through.
The myths worth retiring
A few ideas that don't hold up against the trial data: that delaying allergens protects against allergy (the opposite appears true), that early solids cause allergies or digestive harm in typically developing infants past 4 months (no evidence of this), and that rice cereal in a bottle helps a baby sleep longer (no trial has shown solids improve sleep — that one's just family folklore). None of this means you have to rush; if your baby isn't showing readiness signs at exactly 6 months, a few extra weeks of milk-only feeding is completely fine. The goal isn't speed, it's getting the exposure in during the window the research actually studied — starting around 6 months and continuing regularly from there.
